چکیده

Atomic optical clocks and search for variation of the fine structure constant. Abstract Theories unifying gravity and other interactions suggest the possibility of spatial and temporal variation of physical " constants ". Accuracy achieved for the atomic optical frequency standards (optical clocks) approaches the level when possible time evolution of the fine structure constant α can be studied by comparisons of rates between clocks based on different atomic transitions in different atoms. The sensitivity to variation of α is due to relativistic corrections which are different in different atoms (∼ Z 2 α 2). We have calculated the values of the relativistic energy shifts in In II, Tl II, Ba II and Ra II which all can be used as atomic optical clocks. The results are to be used to translate any change in the clock's rate into variation of α.

Trapping of neutral mercury atoms and prospects for optical lattice clocks.

We report vapor-cell magneto-optical trapping of Hg isotopes on the (1)S(0)-(3)P(1) intercombination transition. Six abundant isotopes, including four bosons and two fermions, were trapped. Hg is the heaviest nonradioactive atom trapped so far, which enables sensitive atomic searches for "new physics" beyond the standard model. We propose an accurate optical lattice clock based on Hg and evalua...

2 8 Ju l 2 00 4 Atomic Clocks and the Search for Variation of the Fine Structure Constant

Evidence that the fine structure constant, α = e 2 /¯ hc, was different in an early epoch has recently been found in quasar (QSO) absorption spectra. An accurate laboratory measurement of α variation could help to distinguish between space and time variation of α and possibly confirm the QSO results. We have performed calculations of the relativistic energy shifts that a variation of α would ca...

experimental constraint on dark matter detection with optical atomic clocks

The total mass density of the Universe appears to be dominated by dark matter. However, beyond its gravitational interactions at the galactic scale, little is known about its nature1. Several proposals have been advanced in recent years for the detection of dark matter2–4. In particular, a network of atomic clocks could be used to search for transient indicators of hypothetical dark matter5 in ...

Precision atomic spectroscopy for improved limits on variation of the fine structure constant and local position invariance.

We report tests of local position invariance and the variation of fundamental constants from measurements of the frequency ratio of the 282-nm 199Hg+ optical clock transition to the ground state hyperfine splitting in 133Cs. Analysis of the frequency ratio of the two clocks, extending over 6 yr at NIST, is used to place a limit on its fractional variation of <5.8x10(-6) per change in normalized...
